Bite-Sized Space News

Starship In-Space Refueling

A recent update from NASA indicates that SpaceX is progressing toward demonstrating in-space refueling of Starship by next year, a pivotal advancement for utilizing the vehicle to return humans to the lunar surface.

During the NASA Advisory Council’s Human Exploration and Operations Committee, Amit Kshatriya, NASA's deputy associate administrator for the Moon to Mars Program, highlighted SpaceX's achievement in conducting an in-flight propellant transfer demonstration during the IFT-3 Starship test flight, which involved transferring liquid oxygen from a header tank to the main tank within the upper stage.

While neither SpaceX nor NASA provided further updates post-flight, Kshatriya indicated that the test appeared successful. The next significant milestone, slated for 2025, involves two Starships docking in orbit, with one transferring propellants to the other. Kshatriya outlined the challenges ahead, including understanding propellant slosh dynamics and settling thrust.

In-space refueling technology is crucial for SpaceX's ambitions beyond low Earth orbit, including the Human Landing System (HLS) version of Starship for lunar missions.

The next Starship test flight, IFT-4, is supposed to be launching by the end of May! Have you been to Starbase? Are you planning to attend the fourth launch attempt?

Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium

Last week was the Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium’s (LSIC) Spring Meeting, where stakeholders and experts gathered for three days at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland for a diverse agenda related to lunar exploration and settlement.

The event included updates on NASA's plans, their partnerships with commercial space companies, and ongoing technology investments (and needs), and discussions on paths forward. LSIC provides invaluable insights of the latest efforts across academia, industry, and government entities. These talks and insights are all highly aligned with MoonDAO's core mission and objectives.

While most of us couldn’t be there in person, recordings of the LSIC Spring Meeting's livestreams are available on YouTube. Dive into the livestreams and tell us what you found most valuable in Discord and help us move lunar exploration forward! You may also be interested in seeing the results from the LunaA-10 study participants (which MoonDAO applied for and was short-listed).

Important Commercial Space Anniversary

Yesterday was the 23rd anniversary of the first commercial space tourist launch. On April 28, 2001, Dennis Tito, a 60-year-old businessman and multimillionaire, became the world's first space tourist by funding his own trip (to the tune of $20 million) to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

Originally planning to visit Russia's Mir space station through MirCorp, Tito redirected his journey to the ISS after Mir's deorbiting announcement. Despite NASA's reservations, Tito's venture proceeded with the support of Russian space agencies, and he spent about a week aboard the ISS before returning to Earth.

While human spaceflight has been happening for over 60 years, commercial spaceflight tourism is still quite new and only now really beginning to pick up steam.
