Try Our New Voting Hub

Last week's town hall was a big one! We had one new project proposal presented to continue the 2nd Astronaut Support going for Q3, and we had final reports and project demos for the five projects that wrapped up in Q2. We'll discuss each of these in more detail in this week's newsletter, or you can jump straight into the town hall recording.

New Voting Hub

Last quarter's Nance integration proposal created a new and simplified way of submitting proposals to MoonDAO, introduced a new page with a comprehensive display of all previous proposals and their outcome, and added the functionality of being able to vote on active proposals directly within MoonDAO.com as opposed to going to Snapshot.

While you can continue to use Snapshot for voting as before, the new voting hub offers a much more integrated experience directly within the website, where you can create proposals, cast your vote, and continue to explore MoonDAO.

Open Votes

There isn't much time left to vote on MDP-145: 2nd Astronaut Support Q3. This proposal outlines a plan to support Dr. Eiman Jahangir's upcoming launch as a representative of MoonDAO.

The proposal includes forming a support team to execute a publicity campaign through various media platforms, organizing on-the-ground activities for the launch, engaging the MoonDAO community, identifying opportunities for medical or scientific research, and preparing for Eiman's presence at space-related conferences. The proposal also details budget allocations for expenses such as travel stipends, merchandise printing, and payment to Eiman as a payload specialist.

MDP-146: Q2 2024 Incentives is open for vote for the next five days. You are being asked to reflect on the final reports, presentations, and deliverables made during Q2 in order to reward the projects and team members based on their impact to MoonDAO. You will be voting for the recommended distribution made by a Senate member that best aligns with your own assessment.

Bite-Sized Space News

Starship Static Fire

Yesterday, Booster 12 underwent a crucial static fire test at the Orbital Launch Site, advancing preparations for Starship Flight 5. The booster, which had been rolled out and lifted onto Pad A's orbital launch mount earlier in the month, completed an eight-second static fire test, a significant milestone in its testing regimen.

Construction is progressing on Starbase’s second launch tower at Pad B. The base of this new tower has been installed, incorporating lessons learned from Pad A, with the first tower segment placed on July 11. Additional tower modules have been delivered and are being assembled, in order to support SpaceX's efforts to increase the Starship program’s launch frequency from Starbase to 25 flights per year.

Falcon Launch Anomaly

During a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch on July 11, the upper stage engine malfunctioned, resulting in the loss of a batch of Starlink satellites. The Falcon 9, carrying 20 Starlink satellites, lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base and successfully landed its first stage. However, during the second stage's burn, an unusual ice buildup was observed around the Merlin engine, which later experienced a "rapid unscheduled disassembly" (explosion) during an orbit-circularization burn.

This anomaly is the first significant Falcon 9 failure since 2016 and raises concerns for the space industry, which heavily relies on Falcon 9 for satellite launches and human spaceflight. The incident's impact on upcoming Crew Dragon missions and the broader space sector is yet to be fully assessed, but as of right now, Falcon 9 flights have been grounded as the root cause is investigated.

SpaceX is seeking approval from the FAA to resume launching its Falcon 9 rocket while the investigation continues. The request aims for a public safety determination that, if approved, would allow SpaceX to launch the tentatively scheduled Starlink 10-4 and Starlink 10-9 missions from Florida later this week. However, SpaceX may need to wait for the investigation's completion before resuming customer and government missions, such as the Northrop Grumman Cygnus spacecraft, the Crew-9 astronaut flight, or the Polaris Dawn mission.
